Macy’s lowers profit outlook after tough spring

Macy’s on Wednesday said that second quarter net sales fell to $5.55 billion from $5.57 billion in the year-ago quarter. Store comps on an owned plus licensed basis rose 0.3% after a 0.5% rise a year ago; on an owned basis only, comps, flat a year ago, rose 0.2%, according to a company press release.

Consumer price inflation rises amid increases in gas and housing costs

Consumer prices rose more quickly than expected in July as gasoline reversed a two-month decline and the cost for rent continued to climb. The consumer price index for all items was up 0.3% for the month, against expectations for a 0.2% increase. Gasoline rose 2.5% while shelter costs increased 0.3%.
